Florida passes law banning social media use by children under 14

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law to ban children under 14 from creating profiles on online social platforms, even deleting existing ones.

The law, pushed by ruling Republicans to combat social media “addiction,” was partially modified by the state Senate to allow use by minors between the ages of 14 and 16, but only with the explicit consent of their parents.

The law specifically concerns platforms that monitor user activity for advertising purposes or to influence the algorithm of content displayed on them, as well as those that allow the uploading of content or viewing that published by other users.

However, platforms used for email, messaging, streaming multimedia content, news and sports, as well as entertainment, online shopping and video games are not exempt.
